Rio
yielded the function as
political capital of Brasil to Brasilia in 1960. Rio remains the
cultural and tourist capital today of Brazil. It is Rio which
launches the modes and gives the rhythm, role which it should still
preserve a long time.
The 500 Cariocas at the origin of its foundation set up a typically
Brazilian city: no overall plan and irregular streets in the
Portuguese medieval style. At the end of the century, the small
colony survived thanks to export of wood, sugar, and with fishing in
bay of Guanabara.
